Casa Alianza Nicaragua
One of the projects supported with PeopleShare’s donations to the UN Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Human Trafficking
Title of the Project
Providing Comprehensive Protection Services to adolescent survivors of TIP Crimes and Those At Risk of Being Trafficked in Nicaragua
Locations
Managua, Nicaragua
Objective
Direct, effective and sustainable remedies for victims of human trafficking, with an emphasis on assistance delivery by grassroots organizations, including, but not limited to, housing, food, legal aid, access to justice, psychosocial support, medical care, training and sustainable livelihoods.
Description of grant recipient
CAN’s methodology for recovery and social reintegration provides a host of assistance and support services directly tailored to the needs of adolescents that have been abandoned, abused, exploited and/or fallen victims to TIP crimes. Services include psychological, medical and legal assistance, enrolment in formal education, technical and vocational education, and family reintegration and/or job training and skills for independent living.
CAN has signed a formal collaborative agreement with the National Police and the Public Ministry to work as partners to investigate and prosecute trafficking offenses and to raise public awareness. In 2011, CAN facilitated the National Police initiative to create a new unit dedicated to anti-trafficking and, additionally, in collaboration with government officials, launched the first online anonymous reporting website for trafficking crimes: No a la Trata (No to Trafficking) http://noalatrata.org.ni/. CAN worked closely with the Secretary of FOPREL (Forum of Presidents and Legislative Bodies of Central America and the Caribbean) in the drafting of model anti-trafficking legislation for the Central American region, which was presented in 2013. All countries have adopted the legislation except Nicaragua where it is still being considered in the legislature. In April 2014, CAN was invited to present a report regarding child trafficking and other children’s rights issues in Nicaragua at the UN Human Rights Commission held in Geneva.
Description of the project
The project is designed exclusively for adolescents between 13 and 17 years old who are victims of human trafficking or highly vulnerable to this form of violence and organized crime. The project is open to assist both female and male adolescents; However, in Nicaragua it is most common to identify cases of human trafficking for sexual exploitation where young women and girls are the targets/victims. For this reason, most of the victims/vulnerable adolescents cared for at CAN are teenage girls. This project will cover comprehensive care and residential services for 11 adolescents in these conditions.
